"Perhaps less predictable to an architect's inspiration are the people who created their own personal worlds, technically perfect, in spite of tremendous hardship and oppression."

Inspiration

The inspiration for our work comes from a variety of sources. Louis Kahn. Carlo Scarpa. Peter Eisenman. Santiago Calatrava. Steven Holl. Raimund Abraham. Enric Miralles. Lebbeus Woods. Zaha Hadid. All people who carved out their own practices in locations, economies, and academies that were able to ultimately support their ambition and unfettered brainy creativity. Our desert island architecture writers would include Robin Evans, Alberto Perez-Gomez, and Karsten Harries.

Perhaps less predictable to an architect's inspiration are the people who created their own personal worlds, technically perfect, in spite of tremendous hardship and oppression. They are: John Coltrane. Lester Young. Charlie Parker. Coleman Hawkins. Miles Davis. Duke Ellington. Louis Armstrong. Art Tatum. Benny Goodman. John Birks Gillespie. Buddy DeFranco. etc... They deserve (and in some cases have) their own temples of worship.

Anime, Manga. An ever-expanding collection of contemporary Japanese pop culture media (arising from the 19th century woodcut tradition that Frank Lloyd Wright so admired) has fueled our graphic sensibilities. The virtuosity displayed by countless artists involved in making films, comics, provide hope that western visual culture can be as immediate, intense, and craft-based.
